Editorial Standards

These are the standards behind every article on this site. We hold ourselves to the same bar we’d demand from the contractor we hire on our own homes.

Our Editorial Commitments

  • Experience first. Every article is written or reviewed by Mike Hartwell, a licensed general contractor who has installed decks, pergolas, patio covers, outdoor kitchens, and paver patios for 15 years. Claims from the field are marked as field experience.
  • Current, real numbers. Prices reflect the 2026 US market and are converted for Canadian and New Zealand readers. When ranges are wide, we say why.
  • Verifiable sources. Every article links its sources — industry organizations (like NADRA), official manufacturer specifications, and national cost databases.
  • No pay-for-play. Manufacturers cannot buy coverage or favorable reviews. Affiliate links are disclosed and never change our verdict.
  • Corrections. Errors are corrected promptly and the correction is noted in the article.

Review Process

Each article goes through: research → drafting → fact-checking of prices and specifications → technical review for building accuracy → publication. Articles carry a reviewed date so you know the information is current.

Your Safety Matters

Building projects can be dangerous and many jurisdictions require permits. Our guides are educational — always check local codes and permits, and hire a licensed professional for structural, gas, and electrical work. We link permit guidance where relevant.
